Some say Brian De Palma′s Scareface. Others, it′s The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. Me? I think The Godfather took too long to get to anything interesting. And because of scareface, I still cringe ever time I hear Sanatra′s “Strangers in the night”. Yes, I'm well aware that my opinion is like an ass hole: everyone has one, and they think every one else's stinks. But I′m entitled to it, and as of yet, I can still voice it: RocknRolla is the best gangster movie made.
The GodFather, wile yes this movie made a big splash and lots of money. $50 million in eight weeks after it′s opening, according to Time.com. But that was 1972, 37 years ago!! and a lot's happened to audiences since then:
It′s dated, and as such, has little importance to today's movie goers. They need action, movement, and it all has to be done in style. There′s also the story, the most important thing of all, and without that, it's nothing but a bunch of
pretty pictures.
I'm not saying The godfather was a boring movie, but the last time I tryed to watch it, I
fell asleep. And the horse head looked fake. There I said it. I did however enjoy Marlin Brando, He was good back then.
Next there's one thing I want to be known before I say any more: Al Pachino is a great actor, I have nothing bad to say about him. Frank Santra is also a great singer, it's just some of his music sucks, but apart from that he's cool.
Scareface just didn't do it for me, there was hardly a plot except for ′Get Rich or Die Trying.′ Which I know means allot to some pathetic—attention—grabbing—degenerates. To me, it′s just another worthless album title, by an even more forgettable person(notice I didn't say artist) who think′s nothing of human life, promotes violence and the use of drugs.
Okay so I know what your thinking now: RocknRolla had violence, and Drugs, yes your right. But Ritchie presents it in a much more round about sort of way. It is useful in getting a story across, not just some line in a song that rimes with the one before it. He hint's at it, but hardly ever put it in your face. Guy has fun with it, he uses cut away's for most the violent action′s, You can see a perfect explanation of this in the video to the left.
In the same video, you see how Ritchie also puts negative under tones in the use of drugs. These undertones are predominate in all of his movies, as well as his indirect use of violence.
Rock′n′Rolla in my humble opinion is by far the best gangster move ever made, and will only be surpassed by it′s well awaited sequel. My reason for this: “The godfather”, and “Scareface”, which are what I think the only competition for this prestigious accomplishment, but can′t receive it because :
I′m sure if I had more time I could think of more reasons, but this list is a good start. If you have another movie that you think is a better gangster movie, I suggest you keep your apinion to your self.
